Science Corner - The Human Blood and It's Component + Quizzes

The Human Blood and It's Components + Quizzes
The Human Blood, a tissue in a fluid form,
constitutes 7% of an individual's body weight ,approximately 5-6 litres of blood in an adult human.

The Human Blood is basically made up of two components

  • The blood cells (Solid)
  • The Plasma(Liquid).

These unique blood components are produced by every human ,with region, race or population not a deciding factor.

The Blood Cells

Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells also termed 'erythrocytes' is the most abundant of blood cells and constitutes 40-50 % of the total human Blood volume.

Red blood cells have no nucleus and are produced in the bone marrow at the rate of 2-3 million cells per second.

An iron compound (haemoglobin) give the cells it's characteristic red color. A combo of haemoglobin in the red blood cells and oxygen in oxygenated blood forms the oxyhaemoglobin.

The Red Blood cells has a lifespan of about 120 days before it is being destroyed.

Red Blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to all of the living tissues of the body and carry away carbon dioxide.

An abnormally low level of red blood cells is called Anemia, while a form of it (Hemolytic anemia) develops when the spleen (blood filter) traps and destroys healthy red blood cells.

White Blood Cells

White blood cells also called 'leukocytes' constitutes only a minute part of human blood volume (1%).

White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow, spleen and lymph nodes.

Even though rare individual white blood cells live slightly past a year, it's basic lifespan is 18-36 hours after which they are removed from the blood and their components recycled  in the spleen.

Monocytes, Lymphocytes, Neutrophils, Basophils and Eosonophils are common types of white blood cells.

These cells are fewer in number when compared to the red blood cells but are pivots of the human immune system.

They defend against certain bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, infectious diseases and also carry out the function of getting rid of dead or dying blood cells as well as foreign matter such as dust.
Did You Know ?
Over 100,000 White blood cells are present in a single drop of blood?

Platelets

Platelets are irregular shaped cell fragments without nucleus. They are also produced in the bone marrow and carry out the primary function of blood clotting in the healing of injuries.

General Functions Of Blood

  1. Transportation of oxygen
  2. Regulation of body temperature
  3. Transportation of digested food
  4. Transportation of excretory products
  5. Clotting
  6. Immunity against infections

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is a measure of pressure that the volume of circulating blood exerts on the walls of blood vessels. It is one of the principal signs of life existence.

Even though the average blood pressure differs in each human, the general normal human being has a blood pressure of around 112/64 mmHg.

While a high blood pressure can increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack, a low blood pressure restricts the steady movement of blood to the brain and other vital organs thereby causing dizziness or fainting.

Now, we are done!
