The Final Laugh - Ken's Story (Episode 2)

During a preparatory class for the mathematics competition
attended by students, Ken left his school bag on the desk with his mathematics notebook on top.

Ben and Festus watched from close range, while Ken excused himself from the class to answer nature's call.

Ken had barely left the classroom when Francis, thinking that no one was watching, snapped up Ken's notebook.
Ben and Festus immediately walked up to him.
They gently made him return the note, as Ken had clearly stated that they were not to create a scene. Everything was now clear for them to understand.

They had sound confirmation that Francis was trying to kick Ken out of the picture, so that he could represent the school in his place. Ken knew he had to be careful from now on.

However, it was what followed next that made Ken regret, not reporting Francis to the school authority.

It was during the school's sport time. Ken and Francis were playing on opposite sides of a soccer team. Ken scored twice but had to be stretchered off just after that!

Francis went in with a tough tackle ,that twisted Ken's ankle. Ken could barely walk.

Fran's really knew what he was doing. No one would send someone with a twisted ankle to represent the school in a mathematics competition, he thought to himself.

Ken knew he had screwed up a bit, he has done his best to avoid Francis up till now, only to lose his guard with only one week left to the competition. What was he gonna do now.
Meanwhile, he had to walk around with a clutch and a bandaged ankle.

Francis celebrated this supposed victory with his partners in crime.

Hahaha!'

The laughter echoed down the hall where they were chilling with a bottle of soft drink each.

'Francis',  called with enthusiasm. 'you are a genius. I salute your cleverness. Even the P. E teacher never believed you did that on purpose.
From this day, I name you Albert Einstein Jr.'

The boys laughed sarcastically once more. Sipped the last drop of the drinks on their bottles and left their meeting place.

It was now two days to the actual competition.

Francis and his friends were also eagerly awaiting the announcement of the name of the student to represent the school. Of course, he knew it was going to be him but he just needed that confirmation.

The confirmation he got was however the least of everything he expected.

The Final Laugh - Ken's Story (Episode 1)

Two students writing essay competition
With tears dripping down his cheek,Kenneth fell on his knees
having been hit on the head with a tennis bat.He could not bear the excruciating pain. He decided to stay down as the pain jostle down his spine. He struggled to figure out who had hit him from behind as he knew fully well that he had taken down the group of four boys that attacked him.

As he managed to turn around,he couldn't believe who he was seeing. His eyes widened as he saw who held the tennis bat.

'Francis!',Kenneth called out, still amazed.

'How could you .....'.His voice failed him.He felt dizzy. He thought the world was melting away, but then he realized his eyes were shutting. He tried to lift his hands but it weighed more than he could imagine. He noticed he was blacking out and before he had counted up to five in his mind,he drifted into unconsciousness.

'Ken, please wake up!' was the first words he heard as he slowly drifted back to life.It was another of his friends,Ben,who had rushed him to the school library to regain consciousness.

Awww! Ken screamed as he tried to sit up.

'My head aches, where are we ?

'We are in the school library' Ben answered
'We couldn't take you home ,as we didn't want your mom to know you passed out.I thought we could sort this out ourselves '

Ken remembered the last face he saw before he passed out.

'Oh! who would have believed,my best friend would hit me with a tennis bat?' He asked Ben

'Think less about him now' Ben said reassuringly.
;We must focus on getting you back to fitness' .

'Where are the others ?'
He asked, still fazed by the thought of what Francis had done

'They should be here by now. They went to report to the head teacher'.

Janet,Festus and Gift who were also Ken's friends stepped into the library and joined the conversation.

What really happened ? Janet asked
'Francis happened' Ken replied

'But why would he suddenly attack you with a gang of boys'.

It was only then the Ken's mind flashed back to an announcement the school's head teacher made some weeks ago.

'A mathematics quiz competition has been organised by the state government for students of this region. Our school will send a single representative while the best student at the end of the competition would walk away with #300,000 as well as a scholarship to any university of your choice. I urge you all to work hard while we pick the best student to represent us'

Ken had won the school's test while Francis came second.

Now Ken could figure out the reason why Francis had hit him with a tennis bat.
'He wants to stop me from taking part in the competition. There is no way I'm going to let him do that.

How sure are you about this ? Festus asked,

I'm super sure about this and there's a way to confirm my claims'. Ken said.

'How exactly do you intend to go about that ?' Ben chipped in

'We test him' Kenneth said.

'And how do we do that, Francis is smart and you know that', they all said almost immediately.

'I think I got an idea' Ben said. They closed around and Ben related his plan to them..
